A manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor measures the intake manifold pressure. It's typically found on the inlet manifold either next to or on the throttle body. This MAP sensor provides intake manifold pressure information to the Engine Control Unit (ECU). By using the readings, the ECU can calculate the air density and determine the air-fuel mixture for combustion process. In addition, the ECU is able to measure engine load and fuel injection pulse as well as adjust the ignition timing.
A manifold absolute pressure sensor has a lot of other useful functions. For example, the data from the sensor can help diagnose throttle performance issues. In addition, it's used to check for a vacuum leak in the intake manifold. Furthermore, the MAP sensor signal can be converted into air mass data with the help of engine speed and Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor data. It's also used in OBD II cars to test if the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve is working properly. As a backup for vehicles with a mass airflow (MAF) sensor, it monitors the EGR valve.
Common causes of a manifold pressure sensor failure include contamination, clogging, electronics damaged from intense engine heat and vibration damage from prolonged exposure in the engine compartment. Symptoms of a failing pressure sensor can include engine won't start or starts poorly, detonation or misfire, excessive fuel consumption, lack of engine power as well as the Check Engine Light (CEL).
